Google Tech Talk October 26, 2010 Presented by Gabe Zichermann. ABSTRACT Gamification is fundamentally rewriting the rules of engagement for product design and marketing. From Foursquare to Farmville and from Nike to the Navy, game mechanics like points, badges, levels, challenges, rewards and leaderboards are being used in ever greater numbers. But what does this mean for “traditional” marketing & UI/UX and how do you leverage this trend in your engagement strategy? Moreover, how do we measure success, and why will every company have a Chief Engagement Officer in the next few years? Find out more in this in-depth discussion with Gamification Expert, Gabe Zichermann — author of “Game-Based Marketing” and the Gamification.co blog, and Chair of the Gamification Summit. GABE ZICHERMANN is an author, highly rated public speaker and serial entrepreneur. His most recent book,Game-Based Marketing (Wiley, 4/2010) has achieved critical and industry acclaim for its detailed look at innovators who blend the power of games with brand strategy. His next book on game mechanics is a detailed technical look at architecture and implementation. Gabe is also the Chair of the Gamification Workshops and Summit, upcoming events that bring together the leading minds in Gamification and Engagement Science – gsummit.com. As a marketer, web designer, and game player I found this talk fascinating, enlightening, and dare I say engaging!

  • Paulginz says:

    @anthonzi
    Sweeteners can make stuff taste like it has sugar, and of course you have all kinds of natural and artificial flavouring, all of which tends to have a negligible impact on the nutritional characteristics of the food. Making brocolli that tastes like cake isn’t a completely crazy idea.

  • Paulginz says:

    @anthonzi
    Arguably, religions and cults count as games. It’s usually about following the game rules to get a high karma score to win when you die, but you also have extremely powerful social rewards in the mean time, e.g. “Yay! i’m an operating thetan level 4!” or “Yay! I just donated millions to the church and now the community respects me!”.

    The health risks of drugs are highly unpredictable. Drugs with a come-down or detox effect are a great example though, I agree.

  • lennyhome says:

    Worthless

  • johnyma22 says:

    Very interesting points on replacement. I will ponder this

  • smartcaliforniagal says:

    @anthonzi and the pet rock?A not so obvious product of a disposable society..So, where is there, & the road?A major excavation or a path few pioneers stepped out? So, this transition to the paperless society (with all the new stats that can be run) has a learning curve navigating finding virtual keys (that are in your hand) for a cabinet (or agency) driving this link to an ol’ fashioned ever growing paper-stack. Evolve? Do the same & expect different?And yes – experience over stuff!

  • smartcaliforniagal says:

    @anthonzi and the solution for society that few see but will be faced with?
    As far as I can see … the good ol’ boys enjoy the money in the game they are playing, but just don’t know what to do with the new “drifter” called Internet who has changed the rules and stealing the “status” .. I’d just as soon be barefoot & naked as break thru some glass ceiling, but what wouldn’t I give to eavesdrop on the “my $” economic conversations to cover my assets…. and the Indians were savages.(b4 malt lqr)

  • anthonzi says:

    28:01 Most websites have not achieved this state of clarity and informativeness, and instead of abandoning ship for a gimmick, they really should be trying to get there first. Of course this is not the logic used by those looking to make a quick buck at everyone else’s expense.

  • smartcaliforniagal says:

    okay anth… that’s the beauty of Shakespeare & the public stage.. Which one has to invite the voice inside to be heard clearly by the deaf man in the back of the room… I stumbled on this, being female w/ a few years on Gabe I probably sound like Marge Simpson, but I am on the stage to learn from someone like you (although, you might prefer to return to self fulfillment of fun) so, while you are on the edge of … we can agree that too much of a “good thing” is still too much…passing thru

  • anthonzi says:

    20:00 Music, drugs, religion, any other form of addiction or cult. They all _consistently_ make people act against their “self-interest”. You’re just cherry-picking your examples here. Why Google invited you to speak is a complete mystery to me.

  • smartcaliforniagal says:

    @anthonzi I want to see government = fun …. sex, games, and agencies ?

    Just would love to have the boy “engaging with other people” outside of the game-world …. because Gabe is a winner here and the 14 y/o knows more than he ever will again in his or anyone’s lifetime …. at least beyond the gorgeous people romance of Twilight… Will make a great warrior as the body catches up to the testosterone …. one of the reasons I am instructing the boy and the 10 y/o girl in safe shooting .

  • anthonzi says:

    @smartcaliforniagal A realistic version of Spore? That would be fine. But game companies do not want to put in the money to make it and game developers are more interested in getting a salary. Unfortunately your son would probably be one of the poorest professionals on Earth if he tried making this. Which contradicts many of the speakers assertions as well.

  • anthonzi says:

    19:28 They are choosing to read parts of books on the _internet_. It has little to do with hedonism. Or are you arguing that Twilight is not read for pleasure?

  • smartcaliforniagal says:

    @ anthonzi on education …. I keep prodding the 14 y/o gaming son of mine to develop a way for someone to clearly communicate knowledge, understanding, and enthusiasm of a subject – let’s say physical systems of the body – to an audience using the processes of “game thinking” (quite honestly a male thing) and “game mechanics”… we’ve come a long way from “Pong” and “Zaxxon (my personal favorite)” and he would find the money flowing from peers and enthusiasts world-wide! Non-fiction?

  • anthonzi says:

    14:25 haha irony 🙂

    14:30 I’m sure some people understood how it worked better than others. And those people probably understood that there was no process that would magically turn you into a billionaire.

  • anthonzi says:

    12:20 Then what about the guy who got premium status by making two round trips across the U.S. so he could save money on a family vacation to Thailand?

  • anthonzi says:

    11:40 OMG
    (using google shopping prices; doesn’t matter)
    shirt= $10, 10 stamps. $1/stamp.
    transister radio=$30, 60 stamps. $0.5/stamp.
    Now calculate how much it will cost you to acquire stamps. SOOO HARD!!!

  • anthonzi says:

    11:15 Um no. No one will use the system if you don’t tell them what they can get for the stamps the have collected. Now maybe YOU can’t calculate how much it will cost you to get a free item, but the rest of the arithmetically literate world can.

  • anthonzi says:

    10:30 Wow you haven’t figured out the dynamics of bulk purchase yet? You are really helpless.

  • anthonzi says:

    8:52 A quick google search for Sid+Meier+education
    mindjack com/interviews/sidmeier
    “Education is typically boring but learning is very exciting. We like to introduce learning into a game without making it feel educational.” Sid Meier, 2002
    Is there anything else you’d like to take out of your reality distortion machine?

  • anthonzi says:

    7:10 has anyone made thing like broccoli cake that was just as enjoyable as regular cake? No. Your analogy is not even internally valid at the source ffs.

    7:30 Yes, you can make anything engaging, but you have implied throughout that you can also make anything as engaging as anything else, which is fundamentally untrue.

    8:00 citation please. What is your criteria for “successful”?
